Manchester United announced in January that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract expires this summer.

An official statement from the club confirmed that the ‘legendary midfielder’ would leave after four seasons at Old Trafford, with no extension planned.

The Brazilian penned a heartfelt message to the club’s fans in which he said he will ‘carry Manchester United’ for the rest of his life.

“I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life,” Casemiro said.

“From the first day that I walked out at this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that I now share with our supporters for this special club.

“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.

“We still have a lot to fight for together; my complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”

Casemiro turned 34 last month, but is there an argument for a re-think on his future? One of the club’s highest earners, it makes little sense to hand a lucrative long deal to an ageing midfielder, though Casemiro’s performances under Michael Carrick have made him indispensable to the current side. To correct a certain Jamie Carragher, the football has not left him just yet.

The veteran headed the opener in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, a huge three points in the club’s battle for Champions League qualification. He’s now scored seven times in the Premier League this season, creating two more, and has been an ideal anchor alongside the revitalised Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes.

Manchester United will search for a long-term answer in midfield this summer, but Casemiro’s performances in recent week suggest a U-turn on his future is not as far-fetched as it once was. On the right terms, it’s something the board should mull over. His mentality is an example an inexperienced squad can follow.
