Simon Jordan urges calm over Liverpool’s recent defeats

Context behind Liverpool’s dip in results

Simon Jordan has downplayed concerns surrounding Liverpool after back-to-back defeats against Crystal Palace and Galatasaray, suggesting that criticism of Arne Slot’s side has been blown out of proportion.

Liverpool began the campaign with seven consecutive victories across all competitions but recent setbacks have raised questions about their ability to retain major silverware. The performance at Selhurst Park, in particular, sparked discussion over tactical balance, with Jamie Carragher arguing for a return to the midfield trio that powered the club’s 2024/25 Premier League triumph.

Jordan’s perspective on Liverpool’s situation

Speaking on talkSPORT, Jordan emphasised that there is little reason to panic despite the disappointing week:

“Ooh, they’ve lost a couple of games, they’re top of the Premier League… The only difference in this situation is that they haven’t looked as assured. I remember watching Liverpool in the first game of the season against Ipswich away and they weren’t looking great then either.”

Jordan also pointed to Palace’s remarkable record – unbeaten in 18 matches – as proof that losing at Selhurst Park should not be seen as catastrophic. He referenced Liverpool’s 2024/25 start, when an early defeat to Nottingham Forest was quickly overcome before the team went on to secure the title.

“Let’s get things into context – they’re top of the Premier League. They’ve lost to Palace, who haven’t been beaten by anybody in 18 games, including some of the best teams in the country, so there’s no great shame there.”

Spending, setbacks and expectations

Liverpool’s squad overhaul in recent transfer windows has also shaped the narrative. More than £400 million has been invested across three windows, much of it on replacements for players lost in difficult circumstances. Jordan insists this period should be seen as part of a wider adjustment rather than a collapse in form.

“They’re just going through a bit of a blip for five seconds. It’ll all assemble itself,” he said, adding that a side capable of grinding out wins without hitting top gear “can’t have too much wrong with it.”

While acknowledging that Liverpool’s style has looked less cohesive than last season, Jordan highlighted key wins, including a victory over Arsenal, as evidence of resilience at the highest level.

Performance flaws remain

Although Jordan’s call for perspective is valid, concerns around performance metrics cannot be ignored. Liverpool have conceded 11 goals in their opening nine league fixtures, compared with just four at the same stage last season. Slot’s team have yet to produce a 90-minute display of complete control, relying instead on dominant spells rather than sustained performances.

Carragher’s observation that Liverpool appear more open in midfield reflects a broader debate about tactical balance. Supporters have seen moments of brilliance – notably against Manchester United and AC Milan – but consistency remains elusive.

Outlook for Arne Slot’s side

For now, Liverpool’s position at the top of the Premier League is a reminder of their underlying strength. Virgil van Dijk has echoed the view that recent defeats should be treated as minor setbacks rather than indicators of crisis.

The real test lies in whether Slot can tighten defensive structures and restore fluency in midfield, ensuring that September’s frustrations remain a short-lived blip rather than the beginning of a damaging decline.
