Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could be set to leave the club in the middle of the season, and his next destination could be rather familiar.

The 20-year-old is hugely popular amongst the club’s supporters, especially due to his academy-product status, as well as heroics in the FA Cup final. Moreover, many fans and observers consider him one of the most talented players at the club; Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano hailed Mainoo as a  ‘fantastic’ player, while arguing that he deserves a more prominent role at the club.

Unfortunately for the England international, Ruben Amorim has his own agenda, and he considers the young player a mere backup for Bruno Fernandes in the No.8 role. Therefore, the Man Utd youth product has yet to make a starting appearance in the Premier League this season.

Kobbie Mainoo tried to leave Man Utd in the summer

Mainoo has been understandably frustrated by the lack of playing time, which could cost him a call-up for next summer’s World Cup. He was already aware of the situation last summer, and tried to convince the club to send him out on loan, but to no avail.

However, if the situation doesn’t change between now and January, the midfielder will certainly try to push him way out of the club.

In recent weeks, several clubs have emerged as potential suitors, but Napoli has been identified as Mainoo’s staunchest admirer.

According to Sky Sport Switzerland journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Italian champions are indeed leading the race for the young Man Utd player.

Napoli have the upper hand in Mainoo race

The source also reveals that the Serie A league leaders have been in contact with Mainoo’s entourage since the end of the summer transfer market, when they had already attempted to recruit his services.

Although Napoli missed out on the English midfielder, they succeeded in signing his former United teammate, Rasmus Hojlund, who is enjoying a new lease on life in Southern Italy, scoring four goals in his first six appearances for his new club.

The Englishman would also reunite with another MUFC academy product in Scott McTominay, who was named the Serie A MVP for the previous campaign, after playing an instrumental role in the club’s league triumph.

Therefore, the success stories of his old comrades could tempt Mainoo to join Antonio Conte’s court.
