As Marc Guehi’s future at Crystal Palace hangs in the balance, the rumour mill is already turning. The England centre-back has made it clear that he won’t be signing a new contract with the Eagles, and now, it seems inevitable that he will be on the move in 2026. But the question remains: which club will make their move? According to Sky Sports, while many top clubs across Europe are eyeing Guehi, only Liverpool are likely to test Crystal Palace’s resolve with a bid in January.
Liverpool’s interest in Guehi is no secret. The Reds were in for the 25-year-old during the summer transfer window, even agreeing to a £35m deal at one point. But as Sky Sports reported, the move fell through on Deadline Day, and Liverpool were left to patch up their defensive issues in other ways. The arrival of Milos Kerkez and the search for a permanent solution to the right-back role have been key focus points this season. However, with defensive vulnerabilities still lingering, the need for Guehi, or someone of his calibre, is glaring.

The situation has only been exacerbated by injuries and uncertainty at Liverpool’s backline. The loss of Giovanni Leoni to a long-term injury, combined with the uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate’s contract, means Liverpool’s defence is in flux. As Sky Sports’ David Richardson pointed out, “Guehi would have brought the assured presence that Liverpool have missed.” If the club’s ambitions are to challenge for the Premier League title and beyond, shoring up the defence must be a priority.
Liverpool’s defensive issues this season are well-documented. The club’s struggles with consistency at the back have seen them concede goals at an alarming rate. Only four other teams in the Premier League have conceded more expected goals (xG), a statistic that underlines the vulnerability that has plagued Arne Slot’s side.
Adding Guehi could provide the stabilising force that the team needs. His composure, leadership, and ability to read the game would offer Liverpool a much-needed anchor in the centre of defence. As Sky Sports also noted, the club’s failed pursuit of Guehi over the summer has left them relying on players who, while capable, are not permanent solutions to the problems at hand. Guehi could be the man to fix that.
However, Liverpool are not alone in their pursuit of the young defender. The usual suspects—Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona—are all said to be keeping tabs on Guehi, which could complicate matters for the Reds. Although the window for pre-contract agreements opens in January, Palace will likely hold out for the best deal they can get, with the understanding that Guehi’s departure is inevitable. The player will be free to discuss terms with any foreign club once the New Year arrives, and that will certainly heighten the interest from across Europe.
Despite the competition, it’s Liverpool’s needs that make them the most likely suitor for Guehi. As we saw in the summer, the club was prepared to make a significant financial commitment to bring him in, and that willingness could resurface in January. Guehi has a chance to join a club with Premier League ambitions and would likely feel more assured about his future than if he moved to a club with less guaranteed first-team football.
From the perspective of a Liverpool fan, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the team’s defensive woes cannot be ignored. The signing of Guehi in January could be the perfect solution to a growing problem. The fact that he would be available for a relatively reasonable transfer fee, coupled with his experience in the Premier League, makes him an attractive prospect.
Guehi’s ability to read the game and his leadership skills are precisely what Liverpool need at the moment. With Konate’s future uncertain and Joe Gomez out of favour, Liverpool must act quickly. The competition for Guehi’s signature is fierce, but the club cannot afford to miss out again. Adding a player of his calibre would not only strengthen the team but also provide a sense of stability that could prove crucial in the race for the title.
In short, Liverpool’s need for Guehi is clear, and they must seize this opportunity while they can. Whether they can outbid the European giants is another matter, but their defensive issues cannot wait. Guehi could be the answer to Liverpool’s problems, and January is the time to act.
