Robinson would arrive with extensive Premier League experience and could immediately challenge Shaw for a starting place. The uncertainty surrounding Fulham’s new managerial direction may also influence any decision regarding his future.

His technical quality suits modern football and there is still significant room for growth. The concern, naturally, is cost. Newcastle are not known for selling key young players cheaply.

Robinson feels like the more realistic acquisition. He has already proven himself in the Premier League, rarely misses matches and would bring much needed reliability. United fans have spent too many seasons watching injury problems disrupt defensive continuity. Availability matters.

What should encourage supporters most is that the club appear to be addressing a genuine weakness before it becomes a crisis. Too often in recent years, Manchester United have reacted to problems rather than anticipated them.

If this summer is about building a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts, strengthening at left back is one of the smartest places to start.
