Liverpool head coach Arne Slot has condemned Tottenham’s Micky van de Ven for a 'reckless' challenge that has sidelined Alexander Isak for a couple of months, ruling the striker out of Wolves.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the Sweden international was hurt while scoring the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 win in north London, when Van de Ven slid in and caught his shooting leg as he planted it.
Isak underwent surgery on Monday on an ankle injury that included a fractured fibula, ruling him out of the Wolves match.
Slot argued the tackle was reckless and contrasted it with Xavi Simons’ dismissal for dragging his studs down Virgil van Dijk’s calf, which he viewed as unintentional and unlikely to cause injury. He added that if a defender attempts Van de Ven’s tackle 10 times, each brings a serious chance of a serious injury.
Isak has made 16 appearances since his £125 million British-record move from Newcastle on deadline day. A dispute with his former club meant no proper pre-season, so he arrived behind his team-mates.
Slot called it a challenging spell and expects him back before season’s end, but not close to the sharpness that brought 27 goals last term. He said limited training for three or four months made an instant impact impossible, and recent goals against West Ham and Tottenham showed progress.
