Kick It Out has renewed calls for tougher action from social media companies after Wolves striker Tolu Arokodare was racially abused online following the loss to Crystal Palace, in which he missed a penalty.
ExpressAndStar.com reports Wolves issued a robust statement on Sunday backing Arokodare and urging strong action against offenders.
The anti-discrimination body said it had been an appalling weekend, with four players highlighting racist messages, and that such incidents happen regularly. It argued that words are not enough and that action should follow, adding players should not be expected to endure this behaviour.
Kick It Out added that football is working with the UK Football Policing Unit and Ofcom, but platforms must improve protections and accountability when incidents occur. It said victims should remain the priority.
Sunderland’s Romaine Mundle was also subjected to abuse on Sunday, while Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri and Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana were targeted on Saturday. Social media firms have long faced scrutiny over abuse aimed at footballers, and Meta, which owns Instagram, said it removes racist content when found, that no single step will end such behaviour overnight, and that it continues to protect users and co-operate with police.
