Alcaraz gives himself 21 win salute

Sonay Kartal has been rewarded for the best Wimbledon run of her career so far with a first ever match on Centre Court.

The British No 3 has been on the rise over the past year, shooting up the world rankings to the brink of the top 50, which she will now break into after making the fourth round of a major for the first time. The 23-year-old Brightonian swept aside Diane Parry in the third round and now faces Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat former world No 1 Naomi Osaka on Friday.

Cameron Norrie meanwhile continues his Championships on No 1 Court against Chile’s Nicolas Jarry, having seen off 12th seed Frances Tiafoe before knocking out unheralded Italian Mattia Bellucci.

Kachanov strikes early to break Majchrzak

It’s a dream start for Kachanov, who breaks Majchrzak’s serve and will now look to extend his lead, which currently sits at 2-1 in the opening set.

The first round-of-16 match to get under way today, from either of the main two singles draws, sees Karen Kachanov face Kamil Majchrzak on the men’s side.

Kachanov’s best effort at Wimbledon came in 2021, when he reached the quarter-finals. Can the 17th seed replicate that run here?

“Three years ago I completely hate the grass when I play junior because with my tennis, we start to play tennis in clay in Italy. Most of the court are in clay. So when you play on hard court, especially indoor grass it's completely different, and you need more time to play with the grass.

“I think now it makes me happy because I play good, of course (smiling), but also, because I can try other things from clay or hard court. I think it's good for me because I think I have one of the best returns on the tour.

“When you return on this surface, it's like something that you -- it's good. It makes me happy. I don't know why, but I really like to play there.”

Jannik Sinner on the fine margins of winning tennis matches

Jannik Sinner said: “I don't know. I think, as I would say, every match has his own story. Things can change very quickly. It depends also before the match what happens. Maybe you don't sleep well. Maybe something happens in the practice session. Maybe you have some pain. You never know.

“Of course, if I have the chance, I try to close the match as fast as I can. I try to make that happen. In the other way, I'm not rushing. I try to play my level. I also try to improve couple of things.

“Today I could have gone a little bit more to the net, which I haven't done, for example. There are always small things what I try to do better in next rounds or tomorrow in practice sessions. Because at the end of the day, the most important from my point of view is to get better as a player. You have every day the chance to do that. That for me is the most important.”

“I think with the way that everything is, like, faster and faster in our world right now, there's more probability that men's game is going to be faster rather than us suddenly playing five sets.

“I think I would be good at it because I always feel like physically I can survive more and I would have more time sometimes to problem solve.

“Honestly, it's super hypothetical. It's not going to happen anyway. I never thought of it. I think for the condition of the grass, sometimes it would be easier if the guys played three sets. I know that our sport has great traditions. I think also it's entertaining to see these five-set matches. Honestly, I haven't thought about it, so I don't know.”
