Chelsea didn’t have it all their own way against Leicester on Sunday afternoon but Sonia Bompastor was able to guide her side to a nervy a win.
The Blues were only able to score one at home against Leicester but that goal proved to be enough for all three points.
Although Chelsea dominated on all fronts against Leicester, they were held to just one goal for the first time this season.
Sonia Bompastor credited her team’s resilience after what was their closest game so far this year.
“Tough performance, we knew Leicester were coming here to be aggressive and mentally they’re resilient. Leicester is a team that is really comfortable out of possession.
“We were able to have a strong start in the game, we created some really nice opportunities. We scored really quickly in the game which was nice, but in these sorts of games you have to score the second to kill the opposition’s hope and we didn’t.”
Aggie Beever-Jones grabbed Chelsea’s only goal of the game with her third in as many games this season.
The forward became just the fourth player in history to score in each of Chelsea’s opening three WSL games in one campaign.
Kiera Walsh was quick to praise her England teammate as she competes with Sam Kerr for a place in the starting lineup.
When asked what was at the root of Chelsea’s attacking issues on Sunday, Bompastor suggested a lack of cohesion in the squad.
“We weren’t able to create many opportunities in the final third.” Bompastor said. “Maybe that’s because we have been changing systems and changing some players but we are still early in the season, so the players are still looking to make that connection [with each other].”
Despite the close call, Bompastor retained her incredible unbeaten record in the WSL with 22 wins, three draws and no losses since joining last summer.
The Blues face West Ham on Sunday in their next WSL game.
