Sorloth straddles Atleti’s two units ahead of Real Sociedad return | OneFootball

Sorloth, 30, keeps pushing to convince Simeone as he returns to the Metropolitano and meets former club Real Sociedad, an opponent he knows well.

As reported by AS, Atleti have looked sharper in midweek and less switched on at weekends, with an established core from Pubill-Hancko to Julián and a second unit needing to stake a claim. Sorloth sits between both groups.

Against La Real he struck Atleti’s first goal of 2026 in the 1-1 on 4 January, starting a run of five in seven and a string of starts. A head blow against Levante then sent him to hospital.

On his return, the Bruges tie proved another hinge. In the first leg in Belgium he created several chances in 20 minutes and Simeone let him know he was delighted. Within 72 hours he scored two against Espanyol and three against Bruges, yet the Champions League hero was benched at Camp Nou.

He remains the squad’s top scorer with 15, ahead of Julián on 14 and Griezmann on 12. In La Liga they have 9, 8 and 6. Facing Real Sociedad, his club in 21-22 and 22-23, he looks set to start to edge this race and restate his case.

The last Atlético-Real at the Metropolitano, last May, was seared into memory. After half an hour it was 4-0, all scored by Sorloth, the first three by minute 11. When he is tuned in, he gives Simeone solutions from the start and off the bench.
