The Saints have seen a whole host of changes both on and off the pitch over the past few years, following Sport Republic’s takeover in 2022.

Eight different managers have operated out of the St.Mary’s home dugout during that period, with the South Coast outfit suffering two relegations to the Championship and one promotion back up to the Premier League.

After a dreadful start to the 2025/26 campaign under Will Still, it finally looks like Southampton may have struck gold with temporary replacement Tonda Eckert, who has won his first four league games in charge, already doubling the number of victories his predecessor achieved.

However, although it seems the Saints may have found the man to lead them forward from a managerial point of view, they could be set to lose another crucial component of their hierarchy.

Spors joined Southampton in February 2025, after former technical director Jason Wilcox left to join Manchester United. Having previously worked with RB Leipzig, the 42-year-old is well known within the German game, which may come back to bite the Saints.

According to Kicker, Bundesliga side Wolfsburg have approached Spors about becoming their next technical director.

It is stated that there have been no concrete talks at this moment in time, with it still unknown whether Southampton would be willing to negotiate a potential exit for Spors, having just joined them earlier this year.

Wolfsburg are also pursuing other targets, such as Hannover 96 managing director Marcus Mann, which could offer some respite to Southampton.

Southampton may want to avoid more senior changes

After a turbulent few years, there are signs that Southampton may have finally struck gold with Eckert and could be on the right path towards a potential promotion fight.

Despite struggling so much at the start of the season, the Saints now look almost unstoppable and with the talent that lies within their ranks, there is no reason why they couldn’t soon find themselves in the top six.

Whilst it may not directly impact their on-field performance, Southampton will want to try and avoid doing anything which could derail their current momentum, which includes letting their sporting director leave after less than a year.

This means that they would have to spend time and resources on recruiting for that position, instead of all focus being solely on the team and returning to the Premier League.
