It’s been a tough, tough season for Southampton. The Saints remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table after a 3-2 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Southampton were 3-0 down before half-time against high-flying Forest, before goals from Jan Bednarek and Paul Onuachu added some respectability to the scoreline after the break.
Defeat, however, leaves Ivan Juric’s side 10 points from safety and with just six points – the worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign after 22 games.
Such has been their struggles, there are real fears that Southampton could break Derby County’s infamous record for the lowest-ever Premier League points total. The Rams ended the 2007/08 campaign with just 11 points.
Only three teams in English Football League history have ever had fewer points from their first 22 games of a league season (assuming three points for a win).
Their total of six points is also the lowest any side has recorded after 22 games in 49 years. In 1975/76, top-flight Sheffield United and fourth-tier Southport also both had six points from their opening 22 games.
