Since leaving Southampton on loan, Ben Brereton Diaz is flying with confidence. He scored yet another goal for Sheffield United last night.
Ben Brereton Diaz is a name which Southampton fans might have forgotten about only a month ago. This is because the Chile international struggled to gel into Russell Martin's philosophy; admittedly, he was given no chances.
Under Ivan Juric, the acceptance was that it was best for all parties if Brereton Diaz looked for a move away. He didn't have to look far, only his former club Sheffield United.
In the January transfer window, it was announced that Ben Brereton Diaz would rejoin Sheffield United until the end of the season on loan.
After this loan spell ends, the Blades then have the option to sign him permanently. Given the way this loan is going, they would be silly not to.
Since joining Sheffield United on loan in January, Ben Brereton Diaz has scored two goals and provided one assist. These numbers have racked up despite only playing 232 minutes of Championship football.
Last night, Ben Brereton Diaz scored yet another goal for the Blades since his return. Coming off the bench just after the hour mark, he made the most of the little minutes available to him.
Brereton Diaz ran through an exposed hole in defence and continued his stride well. When one-on-one with the goalkeeper, the Southampton star (on loan at Sheffield United) dinked the ball over the keeper, who had come off his line.
It takes immense confidence to attempt a finish like Brereton Diaz did last night. Not only this, but it takes talent to finish those chances. While the confident players make it look easy, it most certainly isn't (my 6-a-side teammates would attest to this).
So, what does this mean for Southampton? Well, the answer is nothing, really. It only means that we run the risk of having let another star go without letting him flourish at St Marys Stadium. But is that shocking in 2025?
The likelihood is that Ben Brereton Diaz will be playing in the Premier League next season. However, it will be with Sheffield United, not Southampton (who will likely be relegated).
I mean, I don't think Brereton Diaz will make those annoying "what Southampton's lineup could have looked like" anytime soon. Still, it would be a shame to see him flourish after St Marys.
