Lamine Yamal opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, before a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal saw the Spaniard’s take a 3-0 lead before the break.

If it wasn’t already, the win was secured thanks to an own goal from Hassan Al Tambakti early in the second half.

As it happened

Less than a minute played, and Yamal, facing three players, dropped a Saudi player to the floor and put in a dangerous cross – the standard was set.

The onslaught had started, and in the 11th minute, Spain opened the scoring, Yamal the scorer and Oyarzabal the provider. A one-two between the striker and Álex Baena set Oyarzabal down the left wing to swing a cross to the back post that was finished by Yamal.

The young superstar had arrived at the World Cup; it was his first start and first goal at the tournament. The only player younger than him to open the scoring in a World Cup match was Pelé in 1958.

Provider turned scorer in minute 20 when a move that involved a Pedro Porro cross, headers from Marc Cucurella and Dani Olmo was finished by Oyarzabal.

Oyarzabal didn’t touch the ball for the first 30 minutes against Cape Verde – the first to do so at a World Cup. His two goals and one assist in the first 25 minutes of this game made him just the third player to register three goal involvements in that time since the 1966 World Cup, according to Opta.

The stars of the first half, Yamal and Oyarzabal, only saw 45 minutes as they were replaced by Yeremy Pino and Ferran Torres – their work was done.

Spain weren’t finished. A Spanish corner was volleyed by Cucurella and saved by Mohammed Al Owais, but rebounded off his defender, Hassan Al Tambakti, and into his own net. In the 49th minute, it was 4-0, and the game was all but over.

The rest of the second half saw Spain rotate heavily and Saudi Arabia chase the ball. Ferran Torres scored a fifth goal in added time, but it was ruled out for offside.

Group H has Spain at the top on four points and will play Uruguay on Saturday, 27 June at 1am UK time in Guadalajara. Saudi Arabia sit in third with one point and will face Cape Verde at the same time in Houston.
