Spanish football has rallied in support after a head-on train collision near Córdoba left 39 dead and more than 150 injured.
According to L'Équipe, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared three days of national mourning after Sunday night’s crash at Adamuz, Andalusia. As of Monday evening, 43 people remained in hospital, including 12 in intensive care.
David Cordon, 50, father of Getafe footballer Davinchi, is among the injured after travelling on the Madrid to Huelva service that was struck. He had attended Getafe against Valencia, a 0-1 defeat, earlier in the day with his son.
The left-back, signed by Getafe this summer, wrote on social media that he placed his faith and will in Christ and, whatever happens, believed in his eternal love. Getafe urged maximum respect, caution and solidarity, adding that they remained hopeful.
Clubs across the pyramid, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Betis and Sevilla, issued messages of condolence and support. Many teams, including Real Madrid’s players and staff, observed a minute’s silence before training on Monday.
Kylian Mbappé said his thoughts were with the victims and families, adding that some things matter more than football. A minute’s silence was held before Elche-Sevilla and Granada-Eibar in Liga and Liga 2, and will also precede Real Madrid and Villarreal’s home Champions League ties on Tuesday at 21:00. The Spanish football federation suspended the planned opening of its Supercopa exhibition.
