Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas has publicly addressed the future of Swedish striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The Red Devils have been linked with numerous players from the Lisbon-based club since Ruben Amorim took over at Old Trafford in November.
Geovany Quenda has been heavily linked with a summer move while centre back Goncalo Inacio is also said to be of interest.
United under Amorim lack substantial firepower, so there have also been numerous reports linking to them to making a move for striker Viktor Gyokeres.
Nonetheless, a recent report suggested that the Red would not pursue a deal for the Swede due to his age profile and the cost of the signing.
Speaking to Sporting TV in comments carried by newspaper A Bola, the club’s president had his say on the transfer saga.
He referenced the constant rumours swirling over the Swede’s future by stating, “Gyokeres was leaving in the summer, a year ago, a year and a half ago… Gyokeres was going to leave, anyway. We were champions and he was already leaving.”
The president also claimed that it would have been impossible for a club to try and sign the star striker in the winter market as they chase a consecutive league title.
He said, “in January it was impossible and it remained so. I’m not going to add to it, it’s already very media-driven and it’s not worth talking about the summer market.”
Gyokeres is well-known to have a release clause for the summer and he hardly shut down hopes of a move for the forward when he admitted that all “players have a market and clauses.”
There have been recent concerning reports about the striker who has not been consistently starting games for Sporting CP at the moment. His boss Rui Borges has claimed that the attacker does not currently have the physical condition to regularly start matches.
What’s more, it has also been suggested that United might pursue younger, cheaper options in the summer to bolster their attack such as Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap and FC Porto’s Samu Aghehowa.
