Spurs have reportedly beaten Manchester United to the signing of Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in the summer transfer window.
The midfielder was made available for sale after the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League last season.
The 21-year-old was one of the few bright sparks in a miserable season for the east London outfit and a player who could command a big transfer fee as they look to comply with the EFL’s financial regulations.
According to The Athletic, Spurs have agreed to buy Fernandes for a “guaranteed fee” of £85 million, which was the “highest offer” received by West Ham.
Manchester United were interested in signing Fernandes as they look to rebuild their midfield ahead of next season. However, the transfer fee and player’s wages were “higher than they were willing to pay” and they will “shift their focus to other targets”.
Sky Sports News report that the Red Devils “pushed hard” to land the former Sporting academy graduate, but they only want to buy players at the “right valuation”. It’s claimed that his preference was “not clear” and they will only pursue players who “really want” to play for the club.
The deal will see Spurs smash their previous transfer record, which they set in 2024 when they spent £65 million to buy Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth.
The Portugal international scored three goals and created four assists in 36 Premier League appearances last season after joining West Ham from Southampton for £38 million last summer.
Fernandes looks set to be Spurs’ fourth signing of the window after clinching deals for Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers and buying Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for £52 million.
