Spurs defender in WhoScored team of the week

Last weekend, Spurs were condemned to another loss, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Despite this, there were a number of good performances throughout the team, particularly amongst the very makeshift backline.

No more so than Pedro Porro, who put in his best performance in a long time. Over the last couple of months, there had been a clear decline in performance. Some had attributed it to the interest from Real Madrid playing on his mind, whilst others said it was more due to fatigue, playing most games for club and country this season so far.

However, he seemed to have his mojo back in the game against Newcastle. Within the first five minutes, he had registered an assist for Dominic Solanke, with his quick and whipped cross well met by the striker, who headed the ball across goal and into the bottom corner.

During the second half, the Spanish defender continued to put strong crosses into the box, but with less success, through no fault of his own. Throughout the 90 minutes, he recorded; three clearances, one blocked shot, five tackles, one last man tackle, two chances created, one big chance created, 5/6 ground duels won, and two shots of his own.

Furthermore, due to the game state, Newcastle had sat back in the second half. When they would win the ball back, they'd often look for a diagonal ball in behind to the speedy Anthony Gordon, but Porro was often on hand to cut the ball out, and restart attacks for Ange's side.

As a result of this performance, he has been recognised by WhoScored with a place in their team of the week for gameweek 20, with a rating of 7.73. Ahead of him on the right flank is Bryan Mbuemo of Brentford, what a right side that would make for Spurs one day.

Whilst his performance against Wolves was not as good, he did register an assist in that game, meaning it is two in his last two games. Furthermore, he played a big part in the build up for Brennan Johnson's goal in that game too. It is clear he is beginning to get back to his best form that we all know he is more than capable of.

All of this was whilst playing in a back four along side; a right-back at centre back, a central midfielder at centre back, and Sergio Reguilon. That too, with a 25-year old debutant Brandon Austin in goal. Safe to say that Porro is the experienced head (who is capable at the level) in that back line. It was a good collective effort from everyone, with the 25-year old the leader in there.
