Tottenham ended a 17-year trophy drought with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday at San Mamés in Bilbao.
In a cagey first half with few clear openings, it was Brennan Johnson who made the key breakthrough just before the interval. His lively presence inside the box unsettled United’s defence, sparking the move that led to the only goal of the night.
The finish itself was a scrappy one. Pape Sarr delivered a dangerous ball into the area, where Johnson and Luke Shaw both lunged to meet it. The ball ricocheted awkwardly between them, struck Shaw’s arm, and trickled towards goal.
Johnson managed the faintest of touches at the near post to make sure it crossed the line and with that, Spurs fans erupted in celebration inside a bouncing San Mamés.
Ruben Amorim's side responded well after the restart and looked the stronger side as they pushed for an equaliser, carving out a handful of excellent chances.
Bruno Fernandes floated a teasing free-kick onto the boot of Leny Yoro, only for Guglielmo Vicario to pull off a sharp save.
Moments later, Micky van de Ven came to the rescue, athletically clearing Rasmus Hojlund’s header off the line.
As the game edged into added time, Vicario produced one final moment of heroics - diving to keep out Shaw’s close-range header. Casemiro then fired into the side netting as United's hopes of a late comeback slipped away.
For Spurs, the win brings a long-awaited end to their 17-year silverware drought — their first trophy since the 2008 League Cup and their first European title since 1984. It also guarantees Champions League football next season.
For the Red Devils, though, it’s a bitter finish to a tough campaign — one that leaves them without European football of any kind next term.
