Roberto De Zerbi has turned down the chance to replace Ange Postecoglou as Tottenham Hotspur manager.
Postecoglou was sacked by Spurs on Friday following the club’s 17th-place finish in the Premier League.
Despite winning the Europa League to end the club’s 17-year trophy drought, the Australian was dismissed after the club’s lowest league finish since 1977. Their 22 defeats in the Premier League was a club record.
Spurs thanked Postecoglou for his achievements in Europe, but in a statement said the board ‘unanimously concluded that it is in the best interests of the Club for a change to take place’.
The North Londoners are understood to have approached former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi over the role.
However, the Italian has turned down the approach in favour of staying at current club Marseille. De Zerbi led the French side to Champions League qualification last season.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Thomas Frank is the frontrunner for the position. Talks are expected to accelerate between Spurs and Brentford in the coming days.
Frank has won admirers for establishing Brentford as a Premier League outfit in recent seasons, despite a comparatively modest budget.
Fulham manager Marco Silva has also been placed on Tottenham’s shortlist of potential candidates.
