Welcome to the Newcastle v Bromley preview.
Sunday 12th January – 3PM
Newcastle play host to League Two side Bromley in the FA Cup this weekend, as we look to build further on our superb run of seven straight wins in all competitions.
The Toon fans have been loving successful trips to Man Utd, Tottenham and Arsenal over the past two weeks but will we find home comforts this weekend, or will we be caught cold against a team desperate to make the headlines with a giant killing?
Bromley have been on a good run of form themselves recently, but will be looking to recover from a 4-1 defeat away at Crewe, that halted an impressive ten games unbeaten. They will undoubtedly be backed by fantastic support, who will be hoping to enjoy every minute of their first ever trip to St James’ Park.
Newcastle’s form has been phenomenal recently, with seven straight victories in all competitions firing us to within a point of the top four and ninety minutes from Wembley. Twenty goals scored and just two conceded have shown we have every player doing their job to the best of their ability. We’re proving hard to break down at the back, combative in midfield and deadly in attack, so will be looking to take this into the cup tie on Sunday.
Bromley have won three, drawn two and lost one of their past six matches. In the cup, they have reached the third round with away wins over National League sides Rochdale and Solihull Moors. They won these games the hard way by coming from behind in both, in fact they managed two goals in injury time to beat Rochdale 4-3 in one of the ties of round one.
Newcastle travelled to Arsenal on Tuesday night to do battle in the League Cup semi-final. Goals from Isak and Gordon sealed a fine 2-0 win in front of six thousand delirious black and white supporters. We’re only halfway through the tie but with the home leg still to come, it’s hard not to feel United already have one studded boot in the Wembley final. Pride comes before a fall however and every single Toon fan should exercise caution when discussing a trip to the big smoke for a cup final.
Bromley went away to Crewe at the weekend and were soundly beaten 4-1. At 2-0 down, they did threaten a comeback when scoring a penalty, but two more Crewe goals and a Bromley red card made it a fairly miserable afternoon for the Ravens.
Stat attack!
Newcastle and Bromley have never met before in any competition or any level.
Newcastle have won five of their last ten FA Cup third round ties.
Bromley are competing in the third round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history.
Newcastle have won one, drawn one and lost one of their last three home FA Cup third round ties, most recently losing 1-0 to Cambridge United in 2022.
Memorable match
In 1999, Newcastle were looking to repeat their FA Cup run to Wembley from the previous season, hoping to bring the cup home this time around. We welcomed Crystal Palace to St James’ Park in the third round but were soon feeling the pressure when Shay Given was sent off early on for handling the ball outside of the area. His replacement Steve Harper’s first task was to fish the ball out of the net as Palace threatened a major upset by taking a 1-0 lead into half-time.
Thankfully United improved in the second half and were back on level terms when Gary Speed volleyed home a fine effort. With a replay looking likely, Alan Shearer took a touch and steered home the winning goal to set up a fourth round home tie with Bradford City in a run that would take us all the way to more cup final heartbreak. Final Score Newcastle 2-1 Crystal Palace.
Played for both
Hard to find almost any connection between these two clubs…apart from one. He hasn’t played for both but the current Bromley manager is none other than former Magpies coach Andy Woodman (and the Dad of former goalkeeper Freddie).
He was delighted when the draw was made but let’s hope that’s where his enjoyment stops, on what promises to be a huge occasion for his Bromley team.
Managers
Eddie Howe after a tremendous 2-0 League Cup win away at Arsenal:
“Today is another big step forward when you look at the recent run we’ve had away from home. We played with real confidence and belief but in terms of the tie it’s still very much alive and finely balanced and we have a really tough home leg to come. There was a lot of fatigue in the second half. We started off on the front foot but then we fatigued and then it was about our mentality to defend. We have to try and win at any ground and go into any game feeling that we are capable of doing that.”
Andy Woodman after a 4-1 defeat away to Crewe:
“We weren’t at the races, were we, let’s be honest. I can’t take anything away from Crewe – their front two caused us problems all day long. I don’t think there was a player on the pitch today who could come away with any credit at all. We were miles off it – all over the place. We left spaces and players. We were so off it today. It’s so not like us. They exposed us all over the place. I can accept getting beat, but I can’t accept it when I don’t see us like us. We were humbled today.”
Newcastle United fans food bank will once again be collecting opposite the Gallowgate end and gratefully receiving food, money and toiletries for those in need. Of particular interest are non-perishable food and drink items (such as noodles, pasta, rice, canned food, soup, cereal, cordial, long life milk etc) as well as toiletries such as shower gel, shampoo, toothpaste and sanitary products. Please give whatever you can, any donation is very much appreciated.

With all respect to Bromley and their manager, who is a former NUFC coach, it’s hard to see anything other than a convincing Toon win in this one.
Playing a League Two team at home should provide an opportunity to rest some tired legs and test the depth of our squad. Newcastle 3-0 Bromley.
