Gabriel Silva decided it in the 68th minute with a whipped free-kick, giving Santa Clara a 1-0 victory at AVS.
Silva signalled his threat early with a left-foot effort from outside the box that drifted wide (30.). After the restart he drove from the centre of the area, only for the shot to be blocked (47.).
AVS then had Paulo Vitor dismissed for a second yellow (65.). Moments later, Silva bent his right-foot strike into the bottom left from the free-kick (68.), a clean, controlled hit that broke the game open.
He stayed dangerous, glancing a header against the left post as Santa Clara pushed for a second (78.). The forward finished with four attempts and six touches in the box, splitting his shots evenly between inside and outside the area.
Santa Clara rise from 16th to 13th and host Gil Vicente next. AVS remain 18th and visit Tondela.
