Manchester City are on the verge of seeing Stefan Ortega remain at the club this summer, despite widespread speculation surrounding the German’s future.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper has been at the centre of speculation throughout the transfer window, with his ambitions of becoming a first-choice option attracting plenty of attention across Europe and the Premier League.

Stefan Ortega has certainly impressed since arriving at the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022, often providing a reliable deputy to Ederson across all competitions in times of injury to the Brazilian or purely during a requirement for rotation between the posts.

However, with City making additional moves in the goalkeeping market beyond James Trafford returning from Burnley, questions had been raised over whether Ortega would pursue a move away in search of more consistent minutes.

Several clubs took that uncertainty as an opportunity to test the waters with offers for his services. Despite that, Ortega has proven selective with the proposals presented to him, determined to ensure his next step matches both his career ambitions and personal preferences.

According to the information of MailSport’s Jack Gaughan, Stefan Ortega turned down Turkish giants Fenerbahce during this window, with the club then going on to agree a £12 million deal for Manchester City’s Ederson.

It is further detailed that the Germany international had also rejected a number of other different offers over the course of the summer, including from newly-promoted Premier League clubs Burnley and Sunderland.

Offering the latest on Ortega’s current situation, Gaughan says, “Unless something drastic changes before 7pm, Ortega will be remaining with City until January at least. He has only wanted to move if it felt right after the arrival of James Trafford.”

With the deadline approaching, City appear set to head into the first half of the campaign with Ortega still among Pep Guardiola’s options. His presence does however provide valuable stability for the squad, particularly in light of the changes.

Looking ahead, Ortega’s situation could resurface in January, when the transfer market reopens. By then, he may have reassessed his opportunities depending on game time and how Trafford develops within Guardiola’s system alongside the incoming Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Should Ortega once again opt to stay, it may indicate a willingness to commit further to his role as a dependable squad figure at the Etihad Stadium, but perhaps away from the field of play and as a figure in the dressing room.
