Steph Houghton said she would be “raging” if she were a teammate of Estelle Cascarino, after the West Ham player was denied her debut because of an earring.

Cascarino was set to make her West Ham debut at the start of the second half against Chelsea.

However, she was stopped by officials because of an earring that she was unable to remove.

Steph Houghton: Estelle Cascarino incident “sums up” West Ham

Speaking on the Crossways Podcast, Steph Houghton said the incident involving Estelle Cascarino “sums up” West Ham’s current situation.

She told Ian Wright: “Imagine you’re waiting for your debut, you’re ready to come on and you can’t because of an earring.

“If there was anything to sum West Ham up, that is West Ham in a nutshell.

“I’d be raging if that was one of my teammates. I’m sorry. Because you know you’re not going to get on the pitch.

Wright defended Cascarino, insisting West Ham’s coaches should have known that Cascarino would not be allowed to come on.

He said: “People are saying ‘it’s unprofessional from her’, but surely the coaches and everybody has got to see (that). She couldn’t come onto the pitch.”

Former England international Fara Williams previously described the incident as a “schoolgirl error” from Cascarino.

Ian Wright’s concerns over West Ham

West Ham are 11th in the WSL standings after their 5-0 defeat to Chelsea, just one point above bottom club Liverpool.

The Hammers have won just one game all season, and recently replaced Rehanne Skinner with Guarino.

Speaking on the Crossways Podcast, Wright stated that West Ham are “lucky” and expressed concerns over an interview from their new head coach.

He said: “West Ham need to do something serious. They’re lucky that there are teams worse than them at the minute, because it frightens me watching them trying to play out (from defence).

“I heard the interview with Rita Guarino, she’s speaking very coachy and technically about the metres and space. But I don’t think she’s got the players to do what she wants them to do.”

Also during the podcast, Wright sent a message to Arsenal, after Jenna Nighswonger’s loan move to Aston Villa.

What’s next for West Ham?

West Ham are next in action against WSL 2 side Newcastle in the FA Cup on Friday night.

The Hammers then return to WSL action in an important clash away at Leicester City on Sunday, January 25th.
