“Strong, Powerful” Defender Has Made A Great Impression This Summer | OneFootball

One player who has quietly caught the eye during Sheffield United’s pre-season campaign is 22-year-old centre-back Jamal Baptiste.

While much of the attention this summer has centred on new signings and the club’s pursuit of another defender, Baptiste has gone about his business impressively and is beginning to make a genuine case for increased involvement under Chris Wilder.

The former West Ham United academy graduate joined Sheffield United in 2024, to initially strengthen the club’s under-21 setup, but his development took another step forward last season when he spent the campaign on loan at Rotherham United.

Although the Millers endured a difficult campaign and the loan itself was not viewed as an overwhelming success from a team perspective, Baptiste still gained invaluable experience. The defender made 29 appearances in all competitions and even chipped in with a goal, experiencing the demands of English senior football week after week.

Young Defender Has Made His Mark in Pre-season

Now back at Bramall Lane, the defender believes those difficult moments have ultimately made him a stronger player. Speaking after Sheffield United’s 2-0 pre-season victory over Rotherham United last Saturday, Baptiste admitted to SUTV he feels in the best position possible to challenge for a first-team place.

“I feel really confident in myself, I feel strong, powerful. And I feel like I have a really good chance breaking in.”

It is the kind of confidence Chris Wilder will want to see from one of his young defenders, particularly given the physical demands placed on centre-backs in the Championship. Rather than focusing on individual instructions or guarantees about his role, Baptiste revealed his mindset is simply to impress the manager by carrying out the defensive principles expected of everyone in the squad.

“We haven’t had a specific one-to-one conversation about what role the gaffer will use me in, but at the moment I’m just doing what he wants from all of his defenders and all of his players.”

Reflecting on his year at Rotherham, Baptiste acknowledged that results were disappointing but insisted the experience has proved invaluable for his development.

“It was a bad year but it was such a great learning curve for my first year in professional football. The results didn’t go the way I wanted them to go but I learnt a lot on the pitch and off the pitch.”

Rather than dwelling on a difficult campaign, the young defender believes those setbacks have prepared him perfectly for the challenges ahead.

“Last season shaped me for the now. I think everything that happened last season was not good, but it happened for a reason. I’m going to take all of it and everything I learned from last season and take it into this season.”

Jamal Baptiste on His Partnership With Tanganga

Baptiste has also spoken positively about developing a partnership with fellow centre-back Japhet Tanganga, another player looking to rediscover his best form after an inconsistent first season with the Blades.

“Me and him have a really good relationship at the moment. We’ve been playing quite a bit in pre-season so far and he’s a great leader.”

Having an experienced teammate alongside him can only aid Baptiste’s progress, and the pair have looked increasingly comfortable together during Sheffield United’s summer fixtures.

However, despite Baptiste’s encouraging performances, competition for places is only likely to increase before the transfer window closes.

How Harry Souttar’s Arrival Could Impact Baptiste

Chris Wilder has already made it clear that strengthening the heart of his defence remains one of his priorities this summer. The Sheffield United boss recently confirmed that neither Mark McGuinness nor Nils Zatterstrom are currently in his plans for the upcoming campaign, leaving the club actively searching for another central defender.

Wilder also admitted that discussions have taken place with Leicester City regarding a permanent move for Harry Souttar following his impressive loan spell at Bramall Lane in the 2024/25 campaign. Souttar’s commanding displays made him a firm favourite with supporters, and bringing the Australian international back would significantly strengthen United’s defensive options.

Should Souttar return it would naturally make Baptiste’s route into the starting XI more difficult. Nevertheless, the youngster’s performances this summer suggest he should not be overlooked. At 22 years old, he possesses the physical attributes Championship football demands, and he’s also shown composure on the ball, while his experiences at Rotherham appear to have toughened him mentally.
