The Nord derby between Lille and Lens began in unusual circumstances on Saturday night.
According to L'Équipe, referee M. Letexier halted play for a few minutes because smoke from flares lit just before kick-off reduced visibility.
Several thousand LOSC supporters were unable to see the first 13 minutes, not due to the haze inside the closed-roof Stade Pierre-Mauroy, but because a giant banner in a side stand became stuck as it was being retracted.
The display showed some of the players who have marked the club’s history, including Giroud, David, Debuchy, Mavuba and Fonte.
The episode recalled the same fixture last season at this ground, when Lille’s banner was accidentally unfurled upside down.
