Stuttgart announce return of goalkeeper Marius Funk | OneFootball

VfB Stuttgart have signed goalkeeper Marius Funk from Energie Cottbus, confirming the return of their former academy product who left in 2016.

The club said in a statement that the 30-year-old will be part of their goalkeeping group.

Funk was Cottbus’s first-choice keeper in 2025/26 and played a significant part in their promotion to the 2. Bundesliga.

Stuttgart’s board member for sport, Fabian Wohlgemuth, said Funk learned his trade at VfB and gained experience at other clubs before coming back as a seasoned professional. He added that Stuttgart are pleased to have him in the goalkeeping unit and are convinced he will be an important addition, both for his footballing ability and his personal qualities.

Funk said he has closely followed VfB since departing, watching matches when possible. He believes the club have emerged from a difficult period to become one of Germany’s top sides, driven by the supporters, the stadium and the city. He is looking forward to his return and wants to help continue that trajectory.
