Just another example of the strange stories football can produce.
Al-Hilal Omdurman, one of Sudan’s biggest clubs, have been crowned champions of the Rwanda Premier League after finishing the campaign with 73 points from 31 matches, recording 23 wins, four draws and four defeats.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that the Sudanese side had already won the Mauritanian league earlier in 2025. On top of that, they also lifted both a domestic cup and a mini-league title in Sudan in June of the same year.
As a result, Al-Hilal Omdurman became the first club in football history to win league titles in three different countries, while also collecting four trophies in an incredibly short space of time.
However, there is a far more serious background to the story.
Since civil war broke out in Sudan in 2023, football in the country has faced huge instability, with the domestic league suffering repeated suspensions and disruptions. Because of that situation, several Sudanese clubs looked for alternatives abroad, and Al-Hilal were granted permission to compete in foreign leagues - first in Mauritania and later in Rwanda.
Even away from home, the club continued to dominate. Al-Hilal are Sudan’s most successful side, with 34 league titles and 10 domestic cups, while also being regular participants in the CAF Champions League.
Curiously, despite winning titles abroad, Al-Hilal still cannot automatically qualify for next season’s CAF Champions League through those triumphs. Under Confederation of African Football regulations, winning the leagues in Rwanda or Mauritania does not guarantee continental qualification for a Sudanese club.
That means the team have now returned home, where they will compete in another mini-tournament to try and secure their place in Africa’s top club competition.
