Summer Transfer Update – Big Spenders

Imagen del artículo:Summer Transfer Update – Big Spenders

Part 2 in our continuing coverage of the European summer transfer market. In this article we look at all the biggest money movers and shakers among the Top 5 leagues. To be clear, this list focuses on transfer spend, and is limited to three per league. Clubs that are making money we will cover another time.

Premier League (England)

Overall, the Premier League as a whole has dropped $818.3M in transfer fees nine days into the window. Not bad.

  1. Chelsea Net Spend: $261.9M Players In: 8 Players Out: 5 Oh Chelsea, you can take the Russian oligarch out of the owner’s box, but you still love to spend money like he did.
  2. Liverpool Net Spend: $212.8M Players In: 6 Players Out: 6 Arne Slot era 2.0 is kicking off with a “ka-ching”, as Liverpool go on a mad spending spree. $158.7M of that spend was for Florian Wirtz (pictured above).
  3. Manchester City Net Spend: $103M Players In: 4 Players Out: 3 Not to worry, United supporters. Your club is only a paltry $13.5M behind.

La Liga (Spain)

Despite the best efforts of these three, La Liga is still operating at -$11.6M (meaning there are a good number of clubs who are profiting from transfers).

  • Real Madrid  Net Spend: $134M Players In: 3 Players Out: 1 All that money for three players BEFORE the Club World Cup. One of the transfers actually played for his old club. Two of the transfers sat out the semi-final match (Dean Huijsen via suspension, Trent Alexander-Arnold with injury) where they were embarrassed by Paris Saint-Germain in a 4 – 0 blowout.
  • Atlético Madrid Net Spend: $70.3M Players In: 4 Players Out: 2 Poor Atlético. They got knocked out of the Club World Cup despite earning 6 points and a measly $25.2M in prize/participation money. Weep for them.
  • Barcelona Net Spend: $20.8M Players In: 1  Players Out: 6 A modest transfer window so far, but let’s not forget that Barça have been in some financial straights that might limit their actions this summer.

Serie A (Italy)

The Italians have spent a modest $26.2M across all teams in the league.

  • Inter Milan Net Spend: $79.6M Players In: 4  Players Out: 3
  • Juventus Net Spend: $74.3M Players In: 5  Players Out: 3
  • Como Net Spend: $70.4M Players In: 5  Players Out: 0 There’s a story behind this (relatively) obscure and recently promoted club’s spending. The whole thing stinks worse than a chain smoker’s sweater.

Bundesliga (Germany)

  • Eintracht Frankfurt Net Spend: $30.2M Players In: 2 Players Out: 0 Frankfurt are Champions League bound. They’re going to need some additional firepower and roster depth.
  • SC Freiburg Net Spend: $20.7M Players In: 5 Players Out: 2 Much like fellow big-spenders Frankfurt, Freiburg is looking to add some depth to the roster in order to better absorb the additional midweek fixtures from their participation in the Europa League.
  • RB Leipzig Net Spend: $15.9M Players In: 3 Players Out: 5 I don’t know how the Red Bull stable of soccer clubs operate, but I imagine the Leipzig brass must be sneaking covetous glances over at sister club Salzburg’s shiny $13.2M prize/participation package from the Club World Cup.

Ligue 1 (France)

  • Paris FC Net Spend: $14.4M Players In: 3 Players Out: 1 Newly promoted Paris FC were the surprising leader for Ligue 1, but I suspect this won’t last as the window moves on.
  • Marseille Net Spend: $11.7M Players In: 5 Players Out: 4
  • Auxerre Net Spend: $2.3M Players In: 5 Players Out: 1
