Summer Transfer Update – North America

Imagen del artículo:Summer Transfer Update – North America

In North America summer is the little cousin of transfer windows, as nearly every U.S. and Canadian league season is still active. This doesn’t mean there aren’t moves, they just tend to happen with less frequency and urgency. Below is some confirmed business and rumored action.

Confirmed MLS Business

  • LAFC By mutual consent, LAFC and Olivier Giroud parted ways back on June 27th, as announced via a club press release. Giroud will be returning to France and suit up for Lille OSC when their season starts in August. Giroud was the highest paid player on LAFC, with a guaranteed comp of $3.6M. The club also transferred 29-year old center back Marlon to Shakhtar Donetsk on July 11th for free.
  • Toronto FC Wingers and Designated Players Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi were both released effective July 1. Together, they ate up over $21.6M in guaranteed comp. And what did Toronto get in return? 4g/3a in 15 games from Bernardeschi. 1g/2a in 13 games from Insigne. Good riddance, say Toronto fans.
  • Montréal CF The beleaguered club, who’ve been dead last in the Eastern Conference since Week 2, made two moves to help pad their bank account. First, they sold midfielder Nathan-Dylan Saliba to Anderlecht for $2.3M. Second, they moved attacking midfielder Dominik Yankov to Croatian side HNK Rijeka for just over $400K.
  • St. Louis CITY Icelandic forward Nökkvi Thórisson’s loan with Sparta Rotterdam in the Dutch Eredivisie was made permanent. No financial terms were publicly available. They then forked over $250K to sign forward Simon Becher from Danish second-tier club AC Horsens.
  • FC Dallas Brazilian winger Léo Chú departed for Alverca in Portugal’s Liga on July 12. No financial terms were publicly available.
  • New York City FC 27-year-old center back Birk Risa moved to Molde FK in Denmark on July 13. No financial terms were publicly available.
  • Charlotte FC Get Lighter on the Left
  • It just a little less congested on the left side. Left winger Iuri Tavares (24) moved to NK Varaždin in Croatia on July 9. Left back João Pedro (no, not that one) joined Polish side Radomiak four days earlier. Both were free transfers.

Juicy Rumors

Sharp eyed folks would have noticed and USMNT’s Patrick Agyemang missing from the Charlotte FC roster for Saturday’s fixture against NYCFC. Talks to move him over to the EFL Championship’s Derby County are “close” (per Tom Bogert).

It’s a little stale, but Toronto FC were apparently making eyes at Burnley’s Josh Brownhill, a defensive midfielder who scored 18 goals last season. With their free DP slots, and Brownhill’s ability to score, this could be a wise move.

Vancouver could be losing 23-year-old Pedro Vite to LigaMX’s Pumas. He has 5g/4a in 29 games and his departure would sting. The Whitecaps are already in a tailspin, having slipped to 3rd place in the West since the break.

The media lost their minds when it was reported Inter Miami would make a play for Argentinian Rodrigo de Paul. Messi reputedly loves playing with him, but I don’t see how they make it work under the league’s salary rules. Besides, if Miami sign anymore Argentinians they might have to join the AFA’s Liga Profesional de Fútbol.
