Sunderland’s Europa League return could hand Academy of Light youngsters exposure next season. According to Sunderland Echo, Régis Le Bris is weighing options that may include a quintet.
List A and List B will be finalised in due course. Opponents for the league phase are revealed on August 28.
Jenson Jones, 19, stands out. The versatile defender has played in Carabao Cup and trained in pre-season before the Premier League return. Comfortable at left-back, right-back and in midfield, he could offer cover in Europe.
Jaydon Jones, 19, has impressed. The midfielder, brother of former Sunderland player Harrison Jones, can operate as a six or an eight. Breaking through will be tough given Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fée and Habib Diarra, though exposure could aid his development.
Trey Ogunsuyi, 19, may be the clearest attacking option. After loans at Falkirk and Shrewsbury Town last season, he can play through the middle or from the right. His pace and finishing might make him a bench option, although another loan remains possible.
Finn Geragusian, 18, offers height, power and flexibility wide or centrally. He can act as a target yet is technically sharp. He is considering a new Sunderland contract and clarity over his pathway, so Europa League involvement could help the club’s case.
Jack Whittaker, 19, is weighing a new deal after an impressive under-21s season. Able to play wide, as a 10 or even as an eight, he could be a flexible option from the bench.
