A two-time Ballon d’Or winner as a player, Keegan became one of the region’s most influential figures. After a successful spell at St James’ Park, he returned as manager in 1992 and turned a struggling second-tier side into Premier League title contenders.

On Monday his death was confirmed. He had been battling cancer and spent his final moments with his wife and daughters. Thanks were extended to his medical team and a request made for privacy.

Newcastle United paid tribute to his legacy, calling him one of the club’s most iconic and influential figures. They credited him with transforming perceptions as a player and igniting the city as manager, and will consider a lasting tribute in due course.
