Sunderland and Aston Villa are among the clubs linked with free agent defender Oscar Mingueza this summer.

The Spaniard is available after leaving La Liga side Celta Vigo, and Sky Sports stated in May that he favours a move to England.

Newcastle United have also been credited with interest, while Atalanta, Como and Juventus have been touted as admirers in Italy.

Mingueza came through Barcelona’s La Masia and made 66 senior appearances before joining Celta Vigo in the summer of 2022.

Now 27, he has four Spain caps and offers versatility across the back line.

Primarily a right-back, he can operate at left-back and in central defence.

Sunderland are expected to target defensive reinforcements in this window following Dennis Cirkin’s departure, and amid uncertainty over 2025/26 loanee Lutsharel Geertruida.
