Sunderland fans choose all-time Europa League team with Jimmy Montgomery in goal | OneFootball

Sunderland fans have been picking an all-time team for a Europa League campaign. With European football ahead, the UEFA Europa League draw on Friday, August 28 will confirm eight league-phase opponents.

According to Sunderland Echo, the nostalgia-focused Wearside Echoes Facebook page asked readers to select a Europa League squad from any era in the club’s history. These were the most-nominated names.

In goal, Jimmy Montgomery drew the most support, his 1973 FA Cup Final double save still cherished. There were also calls for Robin Roefs and Shay Given.

In defence, Colin Todd earned a spot after 173 appearances for Sunderland, 293 for Derby and 27 for England. Charlie Hurley, the King, remains revered after 402 Sunderland games between 1957 and 1969.

Dave Watson was another popular pick, a commanding centre half during that 1973 run. He made 177 appearances for Sunderland and won 65 England caps.
