Sunderland Echo understands that Sunderland are in discussions with Süper Lig club Eyüpspor over a potential move for 22-year-old striker Ahmed Abdullahi.

Abdullahi was not selected for Régis Le Bris’s first-team squad for Saturday's 5-1 pre-season victory against York City. He played instead for Sunderland’s under-21s versus South Shields, underlining his current place in the pecking order.

The Nigerian joined from Belgian side Gent in August 2024 on a four-year deal, but injuries have so far prevented a competitive senior appearance for the Black Cats.

Before moving to Gent he had trials with Marseille and Borussia Dortmund in 2021, and he has represented Nigeria at under-20 level, including selection for the 2023 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.

His route to first-team minutes appears limited at present, with Brian Brobbey and Wilson Isidor ahead of him in Le Bris’s squad. Teenager Trey Ogunsuyi has also featured during pre-season, while extra Premier League, domestic cup and European fixtures could bring chances across the wider group.

A switch to Eyüpspor could offer the regular senior football he has lacked on Wearside. No agreement has been finalised and the Turkish club are exploring a deal.
