Sunderland moments missed: Timur Tutierov twist, Chris Rigg clue and cult hero serenaded | OneFootball

Sunderland’s pre-season began at York City, a fitness-first run-out that still offered a few pointers at the LNER Community Stadium.

According to Sunderland Echo, club sources had indicated Timur Tutierov was expected to leave this summer in a deal akin to Zak Johnson and Harrison Jones. Handed a first-half start, the teenager scored and assisted, catching Régis Le Bris’s eye, though one friendly changes little on its own.

Before kick-off, former Sunderland defender Johnson, now a York starter after last season’s loan and promotion, was warmly applauded by the travelling support. His exit was among several tough academy pathway calls this summer.

Romaine Mundle and Dan Ballard sat out as they continued injury returns. Goalkeeper Anthony Patterson did not feature at all, with his future still unresolved. Alan Browne played the first half despite uncertainty, a reminder not to over-read early selections.

Swedish keeper Melker Ellborg has played little due to Robin Roefs’ consistency, yet his name was chanted throughout the first half, echoing the 2-1 at St James’ Park last season. He enjoyed another outing between the posts.

Chris Rigg operated centrally, with Jocelin Ta Bi on the right. He scored and looked stronger in possession against League Two opposition. At 19, that might hint at ongoing physical progress if used regularly in midfield. Aji Alese also returned, completing a second-half stint at left-back.
