Sunderland’s pre-season opener at York City on Saturday could hand Academy of Light prospects a chance to catch Régis Le Bris’ eye.

The Black Cats begin at the LNER Community Stadium, with minutes likely to be managed as fitness builds. According to Sunderland Echo, who travels and plays meaningful time may matter more than the result.

Jenson Jones, 19, has trained regularly with the seniors, covers both full-back roles and midfield, featured in the Carabao Cup and made several Premier League benches.

Highly rated goalkeeper Joe Cowan, 16, could gain valuable exposure around the matchday group. Midfielder Jaydon Jones, 19, plays as a six or eight, and his brother Harrison left for Peterborough United this summer, though competition includes Granit Xhaka, Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra and Enzo Le Fée.

Trey Ogunsuyi, 19, spent last season on loan with Falkirk and Shrewsbury Town and can operate centrally or from the right. A positive summer could shape whether another loan follows.

Finn Geragusian, 18, combines height and power with technical quality to play wide or through the middle, and has drawn outside interest. His progress could dictate a first-team stay, a permanent under-21 step-up or a loan.

Jack Whittaker, 19, hit 11 goals and four assists for the under-21s, and Archie Lightfoot plus Charlie Dinsdale are contenders. Goalkeepers Ben Metcalf and Isaac Allan have trained with seniors, Bayley Hester has re-signed, and winger Timur Tuterov’s status is unclear. Not everyone will feature at York, and any outing would not confirm promotion.
