Sunderland’s retained list is due within the next week, but a twist is likely to raise eyebrows. Three players are set to appear as retained despite plans for summer exits.
Sunderland Echo understands that Harrison Jones, Timur Tutierov and Zak Johnson will be named on the list, yet each is still expected to move on.
The approach is designed to protect the club’s position. Any departures could carry a small fee and or a sell-on clause, and moves may not happen immediately, though expectations are that exits will follow.
Jones has interest from League One, League Two and Scotland ahead of a likely departure. The local midfielder is well regarded and has been around the senior group during a highly successful spell, but promotion to the Premier League has altered pathways for some.
Tutierov and Johnson are also expected to depart as Sunderland reshape parts of the academy and development squad this summer.
The distinction matters. Appearing on a retained list does not always signal a long-term role at the club. It can reflect a wish to preserve value, keep control and ensure any exit suits both parties.
