Sunderland have confirmed the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Robin Roefs from NEC Nijmegen, with the 22-year-old putting pen to paper on a five-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats are believed to have paid an initial £9 million for Roefs, with a further £2.6 million in potential add-ons. The agreement also includes a sell-on clause for NEC.
Roefs, a product of NEC's youth system, made 42 appearances for the Eredivisie side last season, playing a key role in their impressive eighth-place finish.
The talented shot-stopper has also featured for the Netherlands at various youth levels and was part of the Under-21 squad at the recent European Championship. He helped his country reach the semi-finals, where they were knocked out by eventual champions England.
Roefs becomes Sunderland’s eighth signing of the summer transfer window, joining Reinildo Mandava, Chemsdine Talbi, Noah Sadiki, Enzo Le Fée, Habib Diarra, Simon Adingra and Granit Xhaka in what’s shaping up to be an ambitious rebuild.
