El Pais reports that Sunderland had a €25m January offer for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz rejected after the player declined a move to Wearside.
Real Madrid retain a 50% resale clause from his move to Osasuna last summer, and any departure would require his €40m release clause to be triggered.
The 22-year-old, a Real Madrid academy graduate, earned his first Spain call-up recently and marked his debut with a goal in Friday’s friendly win against Serbia.
He will hope to impress head coach Luis de la Fuente again when the reigning European champions face Egypt on Tuesday, which could put him in contention for this summer’s World Cup finals in North America as La Roja chase a first world title since 2010.
Sunderland are among several clubs across Europe tracking Munoz.
