A landmark summer awaits Sunderland, who must balance Europa League demands with domestic aims, so attention turns to the transfer window timetable.
The Premier League has confirmed the window opens on Monday, 15 June. Deals may be agreed beforehand, but registrations can only be finalised once the window is open.
There is a tweak to deadline day. After two years of seven pm cut-offs, clubs now have until 11pm on Tuesday, the first of September to complete business.
A deal sheet can be used to log an agreement, giving a further two hours to finish paperwork. For an 11pm deadline, submissions are permitted from nine pm and must be filed before the window shuts, with final formalities allowed until one am.
Sunderland sealed their Europa League berth with a final-day home win over Chelsea, guaranteeing the Stadium of Light its first competitive European nights next season.
Regis Le Bris faces at least eight extra matches in the league phase alongside the likes of Juventus, Marseille and AC Milan, with more if knockout rounds follow. Further progress in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup would add to a congested schedule.
Former defender Darren Williams has warned that depth will be essential. Wrexham are said to be monitoring goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, while forward Eliezer Mayenda is drawing interest from Championship newcomers West Ham United.
