Both sides had a week to prepare and Christmas off. Sunderland drew 0-0 at Brighton, while Leeds dazzled under the Elland Road lights in a 4-1 win against Crystal Palace.

For Leeds, Lukas Nmecha has missed the last three matches with a hamstring issue. Daniel Farke said there is a small chance he could be involved if he comes through training later in the week.

Sunderland forward Ahmed Abdullahi, signed from Gent in the summer, has yet to feature and remains a major doubt. Regis Le Bris said last month that Abdullahi and Aji Alese were recovering from separate injuries.

Alese has been sidelined since a broken leg in January’s FA Cup tie against Stoke City and underwent shoulder surgery in the summer. Luke O’Nien serves the final match of a three-game ban after his straight red in the 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Habib Diarra, whom Leeds wanted in the summer but not at the Sunderland club-record £30m required to sign him from Strasbourg, is now linking up with Senegal for the Africa Cup of Nations after 26 minutes off the bench at Brighton. Chemsdine Talbi is with hosts Morocco, an unused substitute in their 2-0 win over Comoros, with Sunderland having six players away at the tournament including Diarra.
