Sunderland are preparing for a crucial summer transfer window after a year of heavy investment. Their 2025/26 net spend was £135m, the sixth-highest in the Premier League.
Sunderland Echo reports that last summer’s rebuild followed the play-off final win over Sheffield United, which was swiftly followed by departures for Jobe Bellingham and Tommy Watson. The Wembley victory triggered Enzo Le Fee’s permanent move for a club-record fee, then Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra arrived for an even higher sum.
Further signings included former Arsenal captain Granit Xhaka, Paraguay international Omar Alderete and Dutch trio Robin Roefs, Lutsharel Geertruida and Brian Brobbey before the window shut. January added goalkeeper Melker Ellborg, Anderlecht winger Nilson Angulo and Ivorian youngster Jocelin Ta Bi.
That recruitment underpinned a seventh-place finish and qualification for next season’s Europa League. The window opens on Monday and, while activity may be quieter than last year, preparing for Europe means the squad still needs bolstering.
Only Arsenal at £243m loss, Liverpool £227m loss, Manchester City £168m loss, Tottenham Hotspur £158m loss and Manchester United £149m loss outspent Sunderland. At the opposite end, Brentford made a £44m profit, Brighton and Hove Albion £55m, Wolverhampton Wanderers £70m and Bournemouth £112m.
