According to Sunderland Echo, the window has been open just under a month and Sunderland still await a first major signing after finishing seventh on their Premier League return, a finish that brings Europa League football.

Regis Le Bris will lead the Black Cats into UEFA’s secondary competition alongside Juventus, AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen. Here is how a possible XI could look if some current links come off.

Netherlands keeper Robin Roefs shone last season and, despite interest, it seems he will remain. Versatile Spain defender Oscar Mingueza is a free agent linked with Sunderland, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Omar Alderete brought leadership at the heart of defence and, after World Cup duty with Paraguay, will hope for more of the same. Dan Ballard, now on a long-term deal, is central to plans. Trai Hume could enter captaincy thoughts if Chelsea step up attempts to sign current skipper Granit Xhaka.

Midfield could include 14-cap Cameroon international Arthur Avom, who impressed for Lorient, and Noah Sadiki, outstanding in year one and part of DR Congo’s historic World Cup squad. Celtic midfielder Arne Engels remains the subject of speculation during international duty. Enzo Le Fee, whose loan became permanent after promotion, supplies energy and creativity.

Out wide, Chemsdine Talbi delivered four goals and two assists in 28 league games and has reached the World Cup last 16 with Morocco. Up front, Brian Brobbey offers a sturdy focal point and returns buoyant from his World Cup with the Netherlands.
