Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has committed to playing for Haiti, confirming his international future in a message to supporters.
The forward issued a 148-word address to fans and the Haitian community. The player said in a post that he had taken time to weigh up the decision before accepting a call from the Grenadiers.
He acknowledged an avalanche of messages urging him to represent Haiti, and said he wanted to do right by the country and the team rather than rush. He added that the outpouring had touched him deeply.
Isidor said he is proud to be part of the national selection and to honour the nation, and that together they can write history and share great adventures. He is eager to feel the fervour of the Haitian diaspora and to meet supporters.
The announcement comes as Sunderland prepare for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park, one of the Premier League’s most anticipated fixtures.
