Nilson Angulo struck and took player of the match as Ecuador beat Germany 2-1 to reach the knockout phase. Sunderland Echo notes that it capped a standout night for the club’s World Cup cohort.
The 23-year-old scored from range and could face England next, one of Ecuador’s possible opponents. Sunderland see his form as a major positive and are hopeful he can make a big impact next season after his January move from Anderlecht and injury recovery.
Brian Brobbey continued his run for the Netherlands, scoring again and taking man of the match in a 3-1 win over Tunisia. The Dutch won group F and face Morocco in the round of 32 next week.
Omar Alderete’s Paraguay drew 0-0 with Australia to confirm a place in the final 32 as one of the best third-place qualifiers. Alderete was key again but suffered a late injury scare and will be assessed.
Simon Adingra was unused as Ivory Coast beat Curacao 2-0, a result that also sends them through.
Sunderland now have four different World Cup scorers, a total bettered only by PSG. Their six goals are surpassed only by Real Madrid’s nine.
So far only Wilson Isidor is out after the groups. Many are likely to miss the start of pre-season, with FIFA compensating around $5,000 per player per day at the tournament.
Attention turns to Habib Diarra’s Senegal on Friday night, who must beat Iraq to have a chance of progressing as a best third-place side. Noah Sadiki and Arthur Masuaku also need a positive result against Uzbekistan on Sunday morning for DR Congo to advance.
