Mohamed Meïté settled the game in the 87th minute with a left-footed finish, as Rennes beat Brest 3-1. The substitute's strike killed the contest.
Introduced (78.), the 18-year-old immediately gave Rennes a focal point between the centre-backs, pinning Brest and inviting service from wide.
He then met Quentin Merlin's cross with a controlled left-footed finish into the bottom right corner (87.), timing his run through the middle to perfection.
Meïté finished with one attempt, one on target and one touch in the box from three touches overall, a cameo defined by ruthless economy.
The fresh legs and penalty-area presence worked because Rennes kept supplying from wide areas and Brest's back line was stretched late on.
Rennes rise from sixth to fifth in Ligue 1, while Brest remain 11th. Next, Rennes host Les Sables in the Coupe de France, and Brest visit Avranches in the same competition.
