Szoboszlai’s rise to Liverpool’s Player of the Year award

Dominik Szoboszlai has been named Liverpool’s Player of the Year following a season that showcased his talent, versatility and relentless commitment to the cause. The Hungarian midfielder secured the honour after receiving more than two-thirds of the supporters’ vote, underlining just how influential he has become within Arne Slot’s title-winning side.

According to the original source published by Liverpool FC, Szoboszlai collected the club’s Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Season award for the first time, capping a campaign in which he established himself as one of the Premier League’s most complete midfielders.

Awards can often be shaped by moments. This one felt shaped by months of excellence. Across the season, Szoboszlai delivered quality with such regularity that his performances became part of Liverpool’s rhythm. Week after week, he drove the team forward with energy, intelligence and technical class.

The numbers reinforce the impression. He made 53 appearances from Liverpool’s 57 matches, starting every game in which he featured. In an era of intense fixture schedules and relentless demands, that level of availability was almost as impressive as his output.

Numbers behind an outstanding campaign

For much of the season, Liverpool relied on Szoboszlai to provide balance between creativity and industry. He responded with 13 goals and 12 assists, leading the squad in the latter category.

Those statistics only tell part of the story. His ability to influence matches from multiple positions elevated his importance. While naturally a midfielder, he also stepped in at right-back when required, demonstrating the tactical flexibility that modern elite football demands.

Supporters repeatedly recognised his contribution throughout the campaign. He won the club’s monthly player award on five occasions and was voted Player of the Match eight times.

Perhaps most striking was the quality of many of his goals. Eight of his strikes were included in Liverpool’s shortlist for Goal of the Season, highlighting a player capable of producing moments that could transform matches in an instant.

His set-piece excellence became one of the defining features of Liverpool’s season. Four direct free-kick goals in Premier League matches represented a club record for a single campaign in the competition.

Free-kick brilliance defines memorable year

There was a sense that whenever Liverpool needed inspiration, Szoboszlai possessed the ability to provide it.

His free-kicks became events in themselves. Opponents knew what was coming, yet still struggled to prevent the ball finding the corner of the net. Technique, confidence and composure combined to devastating effect.

Beyond the goals, there was an increasing maturity to his game. Leadership qualities emerged naturally. He demanded standards from himself and those around him, becoming one of the figures teammates could rely upon during difficult moments.

Supporters recognised those attributes when casting their votes.

Joe Muzulu said: “He excelled in whatever position he played throughout the season.”

Emily Keighley added: “Stepped up when we needed him with some ridiculous goals!”

John Hearne pointed to “Consistency, leadership and free-kicks!” as the reasons behind his choice.

Those comments reflected a wider consensus among Liverpool supporters who saw a player reaching a new level of influence.

Supporters recognise influence beyond statistics

What separates a very good season from an award-winning one is often the feeling a player leaves behind. Szoboszlai’s campaign generated that feeling repeatedly.

Andrea Cave praised his adaptability, saying: “He has been the foundation of the team this season, keeping the team going and holding it together both in defence and in midfield, adapting to whichever position really well. Not to mention his incredible free-kicks and goals this season.”

Meanwhile, Beth McCullagh highlighted the work ethic that endeared him to supporters: “Every match this season, every minute he played, Szobo gave his all. He never stopped. This is true Liverpool spirit.”

At 25 years of age, Szoboszlai appears to be entering the prime years of his career. During the season he also became only the second Hungarian footballer to reach 100 Premier League appearances, another milestone in an increasingly impressive journey.

For Liverpool, the significance of this Player of the Year award extends beyond individual recognition. It reflects the emergence of a footballer capable of shaping the direction of the team for years to come.

In a squad filled with talent, Dominik Szoboszlai stood tallest. The supporters have delivered their verdict. Liverpool’s Player of the Year is a footballer whose blend of creativity, determination and leadership made him impossible to ignore.
