FC Bayern has made another decision for the new season. Tom Bischof will take the field with a new jersey number in the future—and, as it happens, he’s taking over the number of a prominent departing player.
FC Bayern has confirmed on its official website that Tom Bischof will change his jersey number for the new season. The 21-year-old will now wear number 8—the same number most recently worn by Leon Goretzka.
In his debut season with the German record champions, Bischof wore number 20, so it comes as something of a surprise that he is now immediately being given the number 8. In his final professional season with TSG Hoffenheim, Bischof wore number 7. Following Goretzka’s departure, the traditional number 8 at FC Bayern is now being assigned directly to the young German national team player. The new jersey with the number 8 is already available in FC Bayern’s official online store.
The jersey number change reflects the midfielder’s development on the field. Following a strong first season, club officials believe Bischof will play a significantly larger role in Vincent Kompany’s team going forward.
In his debut season alone, the 21-year-old played in 39 competitive matches and logged around 1,700 minutes on the field. With the departures of Leon Goretzka and Raphael Guerreiro, his importance is likely to grow even further in the coming season.
According to information from *kicker*, Bischof is currently the first choice behind Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic in central midfield. In addition, Bayern values his flexibility, as he can play not only in the defensive midfield and attacking midfield positions but also at left back.

The current squad planning also works in Bischof’s favor. With Noel Aseko, another talented midfielder is moving to Eintracht Frankfurt, while FC Bayern, as things stand, does not intend to sign another central midfielder.
Against this backdrop, his new jersey number can also be seen as a sign of trust. The prestigious number 8 has been closely associated with Leon Goretzka in recent years—now Tom Bischof is expected to use it to take the next step in his development and establish himself permanently as a key player in FC Bayern’s professional squad.
