There could be movement in the center of defense at FC Bayern again, with Minjae Kim playing a central role, as his future could open up a surprising route to London.

Josh Acheampong has apparently not disappeared from Munich’s radar. According to BILD, the Chelsea defender is still on the German record champions‘ radar, but is not currently considered a hot transfer target.

The decisive factor in this personnel matter is Minjae Kim, with BILD head of soccer Christian Falk reporting that the Bayern bosses would be willing to talk if the South Korean himself were to push for a move. Without a move for the central defender, Munich are unwilling to become active in this position for the time being.

They continue to value Kim at FC Bayern, even if the 29-year-old is not currently their first choice. Falk described the situation as follows: „He can stay, of course – he’s a very good substitute. I know he’s happy with his position in the squad. He knows he’s not in the starting eleven, and that’s fine for Kim at the moment.“

Kim decides Bayern’s room for maneuver

At the same time, the former Napoli professional is said to be striving for a bigger role. According to Falk, Kim wants to „feel important again, like he did back in Serie A.“ However, the journalist also made it clear: „FC Bayern are not pushing for a move, though, and they won’t sign a new centre-back until he wants to leave himself.“

Should Kim reassess his situation, Acheampong could become more concrete again. The Guardian had already reported Munich’s interest in the 19-year-old in January. The Englishman can play both in the center of defence and on the right side of the back four, giving him a profile that could cover several roles in the Bayern defence.

In the current squad, Vincent Kompany has several central defenders in Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah, Kim and Hiroki Ito. Josip Stanisic can also defend inside if required. Acheampong therefore remains an option for the time being in case the situation around Kim changes.
